　源氏物語の藤袴と真木柱を読む　夕顔の娘、玉鬘を見る目が変わっている　また髭の大将の子どもの和歌に気が付く。
　
　私も人生の年輪を経て、時間軸が広がり見える絵図が異なる、男女一対一の関係でなく各親子の光景。髭の大将の心の弱った正妻。玉鬘の父頭中将　政争の相手の元親友。生きている豊かさを感じる。人の情の深さも
　
　だが、ふとおもう。宇治の流れを思いながら
彼らの情の深さ、見える彼岸、出家の光景、浅はかさに幻のように見える。彼ら彼女の食べるものは誰から来ているのだろう、興が覚める言い方になるが。私にはそう感じる。

　最近　新旧訳聖書を読みながら、創世記とヨハネの黙示録の見方が変わる。民族としての集団的無意識、苦しみを感じる。源氏物語にはそれはない。万葉集時代に、自分で刀を取り、氏族、国を守るため戦つ記憶はない。戦場に向かう前の愛の詩もない。源氏物語の愛の和歌もなんと浅はかなことか


ヨハネの黙示録　全てが神の光の下に照らされる、照らす太陽も月も必要ない。宇治川の光景と何が違うのか？いつか最後の日に見ることになるのか。思いは止まる

　今日も戦火はなりやむことはない。主よ導きたまえ。

Reading Fujibakama and the “Makibashira” episode in The Tale of Genji, my gaze shifts—Yūgao’s daughter, Tamakazura, appears in a different light, and I notice the little poem left by Hige no Taishō’s child.

As I, too, have gone through life’s annual rings, my sense of time has widened and my mental map has changed: it’s no longer a simple one-on-one romance but scenes of parents and children, of the chief wife weakened in spirit by Hige no Taishō, of the former friend and rival of Tamakazura’s father, the Middle Captain. I feel the richness of life and the depth of human emotion.

Yet, I suddenly wonder—while thinking of the flow of the Uji River—does their depth of feeling, their glimpses of the hereafter, their scenes of ordination, seem like mere illusions? Who, I ask, provides the food they eat? I know this sounds like a mood-killer, but that is my feeling.

An illusion?

Lately, as I read both the old and new translations of the Bible, my perspective on Genesis and Revelation has shifted. I sense a collective unconscious of a people, their suffering. There is none of that in The Tale of Genji. In the era of the Man’yōshū, there are no memories of taking up a sword oneself to protect one’s clan or country—no love poems offered before going off to war. How shallow, I think, even the love poems of Genji.

In Revelation, everything is illuminated under God’s light—no sun or moon is needed. How is that different from the scene on the Uji River? Will I see it one day, on the Last Day? My thoughts fall silent.

Still, the fires of war do not cease today. Lord, guide us.
