西洋美術史を学びながら思うこと——社会と、自由と
最近、西洋美術史を古代から現在まで学んでいる。学べば学ぶほど、美術はその時代の社会と切り離せないのだと改めて思う。
ルネサンスの絵画は教会と権力の中から生まれ、オランダ黄金時代の静物画は市民社会の豊かさと無常を映し、ターナーの嵐の海は産業革命の煙と蒸気の時代に描かれた。美術は常に、その時代を生きた人間の痕跡だ。
でも同時に、こうも思う。
神と社会と人の心をつなぎ、自由にするのも美術だと。
信仰を持たない現代人が、フラ・アンジェリコの受胎告知の前で静かに立ち止まる。時代も言葉も違うのに、レンブラントの光の中に自分の孤独を見つける。ターナーの霧の向こうに、説明できない何かを感じる。
美術は社会に根ざしながら、社会を超えていく。時代の制約の中で生まれながら、時代を軽々と渡ってくる。そこに、美術が美術である理由があるのかもしれない。
古代から現在まで——その長い旅を学びながら、私はまだその問いの途中にいる。

Studying Western Art History — Society, and Freedom
I have recently been studying Western art history, from antiquity to the present. The more I learn, the more I am struck by how inseparable art is from the society in which it was born.
Renaissance painting emerged from the Church and the structures of power. Dutch Golden Age still lifes reflected the prosperity and impermanence of a merchant society. Turner painted his stormy seas in an age of industrial smoke and steam. Art has always been a trace left by human beings living in their time.
And yet, I find myself thinking something else as well.
Art also connects — god, society, and the human heart — and in doing so, sets us free.
A modern person with no particular faith stops quietly before Fra Angelico's Annunciation. Across centuries and languages, someone finds their own loneliness in the light of Rembrandt. Before Turner's fog, they sense something they cannot name.
Art is rooted in society, and yet it reaches beyond it. Born within the constraints of an era, it moves through time with surprising ease. Perhaps that is what makes art, art.
From antiquity to the present — I am still somewhere in the middle of that long journey, still in the middle of the question.

学习西洋美术史所思——社会与自由
最近，我开始系统地学习西洋美术史，从古代一直到当代。学得越深，越是深切感受到：美术与它所诞生的时代社会，是无法分割的。
文艺复兴的绘画，从教会与权力的土壤中生长而来；荷兰黄金时代的静物画，映照出市民社会的富足与无常；透纳笔下的惊涛骇浪，诞生于工业革命的烟与蒸汽之中。美术，始终是那个时代里人类留下的痕迹。
然而，我同时也这样想——
美术，也是连接神、社会与人心的纽带，并由此给予人自由。
一个并无信仰的现代人，会在弗拉·安杰利科的《天使报喜》前悄然驻足。跨越时代与语言，人们在伦勃朗的光影中，看见自己内心的孤独。在透纳的迷雾深处，感受到某种无以名状的东西。
美术植根于社会，却又超越社会。它在时代的制约中诞生，却能轻盈地穿越时代而来。或许，这正是美术之所以是美术的理由。
从古代到当代——这段漫长的旅途，我还在学习，还在路上，还在那个问题的中途。
